WHĀNAU EXPERIENCE THE CLINICAL WORLD AS AN ALIEN CULTURE

It did not go unnoticed that neither the father nor Koro attended the hui. It was my sense that there was some unease and that the whānau needed to protect these people. It is possible that if I had been a male that these male members of the whānau would have felt more comfortable in attending. However, in the context of my role as court report writer, I did not feel there was any reason to insist on meeting them and rather I should accept those whānau who had participated in the process. Respecting whānau decisions about who participates and in what ways within the assessment processes is something I have learned to be flexible about. There is little to be gained by compelling or attempting to coerce whānau to attend face-to-face hui if this is something they are not comfortable with. The whānau decide how they wish to participate, and this reveals their determination and resourcefulness, showing their healthy and adaptable means of self-protection and fostering resilience.
